Connections through Collaboration and our Collaborative Model of Support (CMOS) allows our staff an opportunity to reflect, practice, and learn how to best meet the needs of all of our learners. We have a literacy support teacher, a numeracy support teacher, a built- in School Based Team block, and an after school literacy support program. Firstly, the literacy support has provided our school community with a new method of providing support to engage all types of learners in writing and reading. For six weeks each term, classes receive instruction three times a week. This instruction compliments the teacher's writing units using 6+1 writing traits program. Secondly, the numeracy support teacher provides weekly instruction to the intermediate teachers modeling the use of math problem-solving skills using math manipulatives. The additional time for literacy support and numeracy support is advantageous as our student population has very diverse needs. We continue to encourage the use of technology by all grades to support student achievement, as well as the structures of co-teaching and co-planning. We incorporate a variety of structures and programs which we can help our students become successful 21st century learners. Our guiding thoughts are that all students are unique and can be successful learners. We believe that the best place to help a child is in the classroom. And we adjust and adapt curriculum using multiple methods of presentation, guided and independent practice, and assessment and evaluation practices. Our pyramid of intervention provides a focus for each classroom teacher and school support team members to follow.
We believe that this is a team project. Students, parents, staff and community must all work together in a variety of approaches to meet the needs of all our students.

The first part of the projects will be to use the moral intelligence work by Michele Borba to teach about values. Her book Building Moral Intelligence - The Seven Essential Virtues that Teach Kids the Right Thing To Do will be the basis of what we do.
The first value is Empathy. We define empathy as, "understanding other people's feelings." Visit Empathy
to see notes from the book and hints for parents. The students will be involved in many activities around the school and in their classroom to learn about empathy.
The second value is Conscience. Conscience is defined as "knowing the right and decent way to act and acting that way. A strong conscience is that inner voice that helps us know right from wrong – it is what lays the foundation for decent living, solid citizenship and ethical behaviour. Together with empathy and self control it is one of the three cornerstones of moral intelligence. It is what every parent wants their child to possess.”
The third value is Self Control. STOP - THINK - DO THE RIGHT THING
Self control is regulating your thoughts and actions so that you stop any pressures from within or without and act the way you know and feel is right. It gives them the will power to say no, do what's right and choose to act morally. Self control guides students to make choices that are safer and wiser.
The fourth value is Respect. Our motto will be; Caring for yourself and for others.
Respect means showing regard for the worth of someone or something. It’s the quality that presses us to treat others with consideration and to value human life, so it is an essential virtue. Respect is the virtue that enforces the Golden Rule; treat others the way we would like to be treated. It helps make the world a more moral place. Children who make respect a part of their daily life are children who are more to care about the rights of others. Nurturing respect is vital for developing solid citizenship and decent interpersonal relationships. It is the cornerstone for preventing violence, injustice, and hatred. It is vital for a child’s success in every area of their lives now and in the future. In order for a child to respect others, he must learn to value himself, and he can only do that if he has been treated with respect.
The fifth value is Kindness. Kindness inspires Kindness
We at Bankhead talk about kindness as an act. Many people see other people under duress, unhappy or struggling with something but don't do anything about it. Good people show concern for others and know that treating them kindly is just the right thing to do. We will be focussing on acts of kindness in two ways; individuals being kind to others (Random Acts of Kindness around the school) and the school doing kind acts to help others in society (our Christmas Hamper and Mitten Tree).
The sixth value is Tolerance. Respecting the dignity and rights of all persons, even those whose beliefs and behaviours differ from our own, not always an easy thing to do. Tolerance is the virtue that helps children respect each other as persons regardless of differences; it could be gender, race, appearance, culture, beliefs, attitudes, or abilities. Tolerant children have the ability to maintain this respect even if they disagree with someone’s perspectives or beliefs.
Our motto: It is okay to disagree with someone but we should respect differences. All people deserve to be treated justly.
The seventh value is Fairness. Fairness is the virtue that urges us to be open minded and honest and to act justly. Children who have a sense of Fairness play by the rules, take turns, share and listen openly to all sides before judging. The virtue heightens children's sensitivity to moral issues—they stick up for those who are treated unfairly and demand that all people be regarded equally. A child who learns Fairness will be much more tolerant, civil, understanding and caring and will grow up to be the best kind of citizen, worker, friend, parent and neighbour that we can have. Fairness is to be honest, be open minded and act justly.
